New regulations like the Regulation on Deforestation-Free Products (EUDR) are reshaping global supply chains. These regulations are designed to ensure that products entering the EU market are not linked to deforestation or forest degradation. While crucial for our planet, compliance can be a daunting challenge for businesses.

The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), effective December 30, 2024, is a game-changer for global supply chains. It mandates businesses to prove their products aren't linked to deforestation.

Understanding the EUDR’s reach

The EUDR, set out to be applied from  December 30, 2024 onwards, is a landmark regulation that directs businesses to trace the origins of their products back to the land, the proverbial “first mile”. The current group of commodities subjected to EUDR are crops and livestock that pose significant  deforestation risk. This includes palm oil, soy, cattle, timber, coffee, cocoa, rubber, and their derived products such as chocolate, furniture, and beef. Any business importing these into the EU must trace their origins back to the source.

The regulation applies for any quantity of product, no matter how big or small, and non-compliance can lead to significant penalties, including fines and import bans. This regulation echoes a global movement towards responsible sourcing, highlighting the interconnectedness of forests, as explored in our recent blog post on forests as social communities.
