We've been talking to a lot of sustainability folks lately—and a common theme keeps popping up. They're drowning in reports. Reams of paper, endless spreadsheets, glossy brochures… all promising sustainability, but delivering very little actionable information about their actual impact on nature. It's frustrating, to say the least.
And it's not just the big corporations. I had a fascinating chat with a coffee farmer in Costa Rica the other week. He knows his land intimately – every dip, every tree, every bird. But he's also facing new challenges: changing weather patterns, the need to be physically in the field to detect plant stressors, and the gnawing worry about the long-term health of his farm. He is already doing the right thing by using sustainable land practices, but he needs help. He needs to see the bigger picture, things his eyes alone can't catch.
That's where tumblebee comes in. We're not about adding another layer of complexity. We're about cutting through the noise. We're about finally connecting the dots between the big, global view—the kind you get from satellite imagery—and the on-the-ground reality, the kind that farmer knows like the back of his hand.
The common phrase of "you can't manage what you can't measure" seems to hold true. And right now, most businesses are flying blind when it comes to nature and biodiversity. Many don't even have a general sense of their impact, and on top of that, they lack the precise, granular data they need to make truly informed decisions. Are their sourcing practices contributing to land degradation? Are their operations impacting critical habitats? Are their conservation efforts actually working? Not being able to answer these questions—or not wanting to—has dire consequences for the health of nature.
tumblebee exists to change that. We combine the power of satellite imagery with the crucial insights that can only come from people who are actually on the ground. Farmers, conservationists, local communities—they all hold invaluable knowledge. We bring those two worlds together. And then, we make sense of it all.
The result? Actionable insights. Not just data, but understanding. We're talking about things like:
Spotting early signs of plant stress before it becomes a full-blown crisis.
Identifying areas of high biodiversity risk within a company's supply chain.
Tracking the effectiveness of restoration projects with real, measurable data.
Helping businesses report that data easily.
It is about connecting the dots between what happens on the ground, with what the satellite sees, and integrating other key data sources.
We're still early in our journey, but the response we've gotten so far has been very positive. People seem hungry for this kind of scalable solution and clarity. They're tired of vague promises and greenwashing. They want to make a real difference, and they need the right tools to do it.
We're not promising miracles. We're not saying we can solve the biodiversity crisis overnight. But we are saying that it's time to move beyond guesswork and start making decisions based on real, reliable and valid data. It's time to bring nature into the boardroom, not just as a feel-good slogan, but as a fundamental part of how we do business. It is time to empower land stewards. This is why we're building our software.
